"This invitation -- says the researcher -- further enhances the standing and recognition of research carried out in Sicily, where time is ripe for the foundation of a new international research and educational institute".

Working towards the foundation of the new Institute of solar energy and the bioeconomy of Italy's Research Council, Dr Pagliaro sits frequently on international PhD evaluation committees and regularly evaluates research projects for leading research agencies, including French Research Agency, Royal Society, Pazi Foundation, US-Israel Binational Science Foundation, Research Foundation - Flanders, Estonian Research Council, Poland National Science Centre, and German Academic Exchange Service.

The aim of the ISF is to promote and support scientific research of high quality through allocation of grants in a large range of fields. Grants are awarded on the basis of scientific merit following a dual evaluation process - written peer reviews and subsequent discussions in scientific panels of the specific disciplines. The ISF is Israel's predominant source of competitive grants funding basic research. Its roughly $60 million annual budget funds more than 1,300 grants a year, providing 2/3 of all such funds.

Every year, thousands of expert reviewers from Israel, but mostly from abroad, are involved in peer-reviewing the scientific merit of the submitted proposals. The ISF awards grants in all fields of exact sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences to Israeli researchers at Israeli universities, other institutions of higher education, research and medical centers.
