ChemFoodChem
dedicates the cover of its inaugural issue to the study "
Citrus
IntegroPectin: A Family of Bioconjugates With Large Therapeutic
Potential" from the teams of Mario Pagliaro and Francesco
Meneguzzo at Italy's Research Council and Valentina Di Liberto at
Palermo's University.
Citrus
IntegroPectin is a family of
new
flavonoid-pectin bioconjugates sourced from different citrus
fruits first isolated in 2019 via hydrodynamic cavitation of
industrial citrus processing biowaste conducted in water only.
Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, anti-apoptotic,
immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, mitoprotective, antimicrobial
and anticancer properties comprise the multitarget biological
activity demonstrated so far investigating lemon, grapefruit,
orange, red orange and mandarin
IntegroPectin in both
in
vitro and
in vivo studies.
A critical perspective towards production and practical uptake of
this new class of bioproducts for the
treatment and prevention
of numerous ailments concludes the article which also
appears in the
collection
of articles selected by the editors of journals published in
Chemistry Europe, GDCh, and ACES journals.
A new journal dedicated to advancing the intersection of chemistry
and food science,
ChemFoodChem was established with three
eminent members comprising the advisory board, namely Professors
Markus Fischer, Victor Freitas, and Irena Vovk.
