the
interview given by Mario Pagliaro to Agathe Roullin on the
path of Italy to full renewable energy on the occasion of solar
hydrogen-powered boat
visit
to Sicily on September 2025.
Dr Pagliaro succinctly presented the outcomes of the joint study "
Italy 100% Renewable: A
Suitable Energy Transition Roadmap", the first dedicated to
the full transition of Italy to renewable energy by 2050.
"They say that a goal without a plan is just a wish,
so as Energy Observer is shipping on the seas in quest for
carbon neutrality, reporters onboard are going on shore to get
an answer for every nation crossed during the
mission.
"For this trip to Italy, our reporter Agathe traveled to the
land of fine food, soccer, and cinema... but also one of the
biggest CO₂ emitters: Italy! Giorgia Meloni has announced that
the country will be carbon neutral by 2050! But is this really
achievable? We traveled to Palermo to meet Mario Pagliaro, a
researcher in chemistry and energy who designed a roadmap for a
low-carbon energy transition. And it seems that the transition
is possible... but that it comes at a cost".
World's first autonomous, solar hydrogen-powered ship, the
Energy
Observer is a former racing catamaran demonstrating
sustainable maritime transport by using solar, wind, and wave
power, plus a hydrogen system that produces
hydrogen via
electrolysis of seawater for storage and power.
Between 2017 and 2024, the vessel completed a 6-year world tour
(2017-2024) to raise awareness for the energy transition
showcasing viable clean energy technology and inspiring new
solutions for
cleaner shipping.
Author in 2020 of "
Hydrogen-powered
boats and ships" book chapter, in 2012 Dr Pagliaro
co-authored with
Athanasios Konstandopoulos the first book
on "
Solar
Hydrogen", exactly the fuel used by the
Energy
Observer to sail.
