Evaluator for International PhD at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos

Universidad Rey Juan Carlos - Madrid

3-Feb-2017 - Mario Pagliaro has delivered today a report about the scientific quality of the thesis entitled “Design of bifunctional catalysts for the transformation of xylose into γ-valerolactone through cascade reactions” which will shortly be defended by Blanca Hernández at Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid.

Report for a non Spanish doctor is compulsory to apply for the International Doctorate Award and Dr Pagliaro has been proposed "due to outstanding experience in the field of biomass valorization".

Part of an overall project dealing with the valorization of biomass towards biofuels and bioproducts, the Thesis has been supervised by Dr. Jose Iglesias and Professor Juan Antonio Melero Hernández, chair of chemical engineering and vice Rector for Innovation and scientific quality at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.

The research work of the candidate has led to three articles.

Two already published in primary journals:. B. Hernández, et al., "Dehydration of xylose to furfural in alcohol media in the presence of solid acid catalysts" ChemCatChem 8 (201) 2089-2099, and B. Hernández, et al., "One-pot cascade transformation of xylose into γ-valerolactone (GVL) over bifunctional Brønsted-Lewis Zr-Al-beta zeolite", Green Chemistry 18 (2016) 5777-5781; and another, currently under revision. entitled "Catalytic upgrading of furfuryl alcohol to bio-products: Catalysts screening and kinetic analysis".
