New leach-proof metal catalysts for most relevant organic reactions

SiliCycle Introduces New SiliaCat® Heterogeneous Catalysts at Informex 2009

QUEBEC CITY AND PALERMO — [January 22, 2009] —On January 27th Canada’s chemical company SiliCycle will be launching new SiliaCat® heterogeneous catalysts at San Francisco’s Informex, the main networking event for the chemical industry in the United States.

A showcase on the catalysts is scheduled on Tuesday, January the 27th at 11:20am.

“Our customers in the fine chemicals business are looking to leach-proof solid catalysts for their delicate productions and we are committed to supporting those efforts while also providing unsurpassed performance,” said SiliCycle’s marketing and research manager Francois Béland.

“Our new SiliaCat products work great for reactions like Suzuki, Sonogashira, Heck, hydrogenation, and oxidation” Cross-coupling reaction such as Suzuki and Sonogashira or selective alcohol oxidations are some of the most useful synthetic methods in the fine chemicals industry.

In general, a homogeneous (heavy) metal catalyst and ligand are required for these reactions. However, homogeneous reactions with metal catalysts have several shortcomings such as limited, reusability, which impacts cost and metals contamination in the product. Removing residual metal catalysts provides a challenging task for chemists in the pharmaceutical industry to reduce its content to a level that meets demanding requirements required by drugs regulators.

Developed in collaboration with Mario Pagliaro’s Lab at Italy’s National Research Council the catalytic materials of the SiliaCat® series are highly reactive and recyclable. There is no metal leaching and the yields obtained are very advantageous compared to other supported catalyts presently available on the market. To remove the catalyst from the reaction mixture, a simple filtration suffice.

“These findings are due to the extraordinary possibilities opened by the application of nanochemistry principles to chemical synthesis”, added Dr. Pagliaro who has just authored the book Silica-Based Materials (RSC Publishing, 2009). “The pharmaceutical industry has now the opportunity to make the ‘green chemistry’ principles aiming to sustainable productions a reality”, concluded the Italian scientist.
